Spreading Your Message Through "Word-of-Mouth"

Getting your message heard:
Call your legislator!

If you know an elected official personally, ask for the legislator directly.  Otherwise, simply indicate that you want to speak with the staff member who handles the particular issue.  Often, your opinion will then be tracked and reported to the elected official.  When used in combination with other methods of communication (letters, visits, etc.), calls can help, but you should follow these guidelines:

  • Introduce yourself and present the purpose of your call.

  • Explain the ways in which the proposal affects you, your business, and/or your community.

  • Use facts to support your argument - unsubstantiated and irrational arguments are often dismissed.

  • Keep the tone of your conversation firm, confident, positive, and courteous - be professional.

  • Clearly state the action you would like your legislator to take and ask for a reply that outlines the legislator's position.

  • Leave your address, phone number, and e-mail address.

  • Follow-up with the legislator after the vote on the bill.  Express your thanks / disappointment with his/her vote.  (If you do not know your legislator's final vote, please e-mail us at  grassroots@guard.com.)

You can obtain your legislator's phone number via a Legislative Lookup.
