Getting your message heard:
Visit your legislator!
If you have the opportunity, a face-to-face meeting with elected officials
will show your dedication to a cause and your conviction. However,
planning and realistic goals are necessary to be successful.
Making arrangements for a visit:
During the visit:
-
Introduce yourself and restate the intent of your visit.
-
Stick to the issue while being courteous (have an outline prepared).
-
Cite examples of the issue's impact on the constituents of the
elected official.
-
Offer yourself as a future resource for related issues.
After the visit:
-
Follow-up with a thank you letter.
-
Ask for a reply on the legislator's position on the issue.
-
Once action has been taken, express your thanks / disappointment
with the legislators vote.
You can obtain your legislator's address and phone number
via a
Legislative Lookup.
