Robert N. Darby Jr.

In his role as CEO and President of Berkshire Hathaway GUARD Insurance Companies, Robert N. Darby, Jr., leads the strategic planning and positioning of the organization’s $2.2 billion book of business, helping to promote initiatives that make realization of both short- and long-term goals possible. Rob also serves as President and CEO of our sister company Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies (BHHC) Workers’ Compensation division.

Before starting his current role with GUARD in 2023, Rob had a relationship with the company dating back over a decade through BHHC. Rob expanded his presence at GUARD over time, including serving as Chairman of the Board – a role he continues to hold.

In his time at BHHC, Darby has held various management roles with increasing responsibility and scope, primarily focused on property-casualty lines of business, culminating in being named President and CEO in 2005. Rob has organically grown the company from $200 million to over $1 billion in premium.

Rob began his career as an actuary and consultant. Prior to joining the Berkshire family, Rob was Managing Director for Guy Carpenter in Manhattan, New York, where he headed up Alternative Risk, Captives, Investment Banking, and the Financial Reinsurance product areas. He also spent over a decade in risk-management consulting, including serving as Principal at Towers Perrin.

Rob graduated from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC with degrees in meteorology and mathematics. Rob is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society. He has formerly served on a number of boards, including the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) Board of Directors as well as former Chairman of the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau (WCIRB) of California and the California Workers’ Compensation Institute (CWCI).
